Boundary Microphone

In a Boundary Microphone, also know as a Pressure Zone Microphone or PZM, an acronym trademarked by Crown International, a tiny opening allows sound waves to reach a small mic diaphragm immediately adjacent to a hard surface. Sound waves a few millimeters away from a hard surface form a pressure zone, or boundary layer, in which interaction between the sound wave molecules and the surface bring the waves into phase.

Speaker Floor Stand

This pressure zone also results in sound pickup that changes little in relation to its distance from the sound source. It also results in an increased sensitivity of the mic and an increases in high frequency response. So by placing a necessarily small mic diaphragm against a hard surface you get a inconspicuous one that has increased sensitivity, virtually no phase coloration and little change in sound quality due to direction it in relation to the sound source you want to pick up.

Speaker Floor Stand

In comparison, a conventional vocal mic has a very directional pickup pattern and is relatively insensitive so that a vocalist has to sing directly into the microphone's diaphragm to avoid the pickup of sound reflections and off axis coloration.

The Boundary Microphone is usually a very small condenser microphone mounted to a flat surface to serve as the boundary layer. In use the microphone will often be mounted against a flat surface, like the floor of a stage or a conference table, so that the whole surface area will act as a large boundary layer.

The ability of these microphones to pick up sound with little coloration due to direction of the sound source and there excellent sensitivity make them perfect for several disparate applications. They are often used at the front of a theater stage to pickup all of the actors voices or on a conference table so that individual microphones are not needed for the participants in a conference call.

Another common application is on percussion instruments. The microphone's ability to pick up sound from different directions makes it very good for miking a drum kit. It's excellent frequency response will pick up the wide variation in sound levels produced by percussive instruments like a piano. Due in large part to its patent expiring Boundary Microphones have become much more common and diversified in recent years. Many manufacturers now produce them in a variety of configurations making them more common and less expensive.

Presentation Skills - Tips for Making Effective Presentations

The ability to make an effective presentation is important to many in the business world. The presenter may be presenting to a group of managers, colleagues or clients. The presentation will have a definite purpose, he or she will have specific goals to achieve with their audience in each presentation.

Speaker Floor Stand

The Importance of Presentation Skills
The presenter uses three elements to ensure they achieve their goals:
1. The content of their talk
2. Slides or other visual aids
3. Their skills as a presenter

Speaker Floor Stand

Presentation skills are the most important of these factors. You may spend a lot of time preparing a wonderful presentation, but if you do not use good presentation skills to get the interest or the attention of the group, then your presentation is doomed to failure. No-one wants to be the presenter who lulled their audience to sleep with a dull, boring voice tone. Or the person who talked so fast that no-one had a clue what they were saying! A poor presenter can go even further!

They may even antagonise the group by ignoring them, staring at the floor or over the heads of the group to some spot on the back wall. How many times have you been intensely irritated by a presenter who dances back and forth, or who fidgets erratically throughout his or her presentation?

Key Presentation Skills Tips

There are a few, simple presentation skills and tips that the effective presenter uses to ensure that their presentation is effective.

1. Focus on your Goals You are taking this group on a journey during your presentation, from first impressions to your final destination. It is essential that the destination is clearly identified, and that you have clear goals for your presentation. What are the key points you want to get across? Do you want the group to be informed, to be persuaded, to accept or to agree?

2. Look like a Confident Presenter People will be much more persuaded by someone who looks like a confident presenter. Ensure your dress is appropriate. Walk up to the presentation place calmly and confidently. Breathe deeply as you walk up, to help you control nerves.

3. Positive Posture Stand facing the group with your head up, shoulders square and feet about a foot apart. If you plant your feet firmly apart in this way, you are less inclined to sway, fidget or dance during your presentation. Keep your hands relaxed in front of you, so that you can make gestures easily.

4. Eye Contact Engage the group with eye contact. Look directly into each person's eyes for a count of two or three. Ensure you include everyone in the group. There is a natural inclination to look at either the most dominant person in the group, or at the one with the most encouraging face! Ensure you include everyone. Making eye contact round the group in this way not only engages the group, but it also makes you, the presenter, appear very confident.

5. Make Slow Deliberate Gestures People who stay very still are boring, but you want your movement to work for you rather than against you. Use your hands to emphasise a point, or take a step forward to bring the point home. Turn to look at the slide and turn back to look at the group. Slow, deliberate movement is best. If your talk is long, move to the other side of the slides every five minutes, so that the group have somewhere different to look.

6. Work with, rather than Against, your Slides Many presenters put up a slide covered in text, data or bullet points, and then talk about something completely different! Appreciate that your group will either listen to what you are saying, or they will read the slide. They cannot do both! Keep your slides simple, and guide the group through the information. Drop each point down one at a time, and read it with the group. If you are using a chart or diagram, tell the group the context first and then tell them where you want them to look. If you want the group to look at the slide, turn look at it yourself, and then turn back to the group. You decide where you want them to look, and they will follow you.

These few presentation skills will ensure you hold the interest and attention of your group from the beginning to the close of your presentation.

Effective Public Speaking Skill - Using a Joke Format to Add Humor to your Presentations

Adding humour to your speech or presentation can be beneficial because it helps you to connect with your listeners (most people like to laugh and be entertained) and it can help them more easily remember your message.

Speaker Floor Stand

The purpose of this article is not to turn you into a comedian. It's just to present you with some ways to add a little humour to your speech.

Speaker Floor Stand

With that in mind here are two fast and simple, down and dirty formats for including humour in your next speech or presentation.

The first is called: "Joke Format"

This details a way in which you can format street jokes (jokes that friends might tell you in a bar) together to form a comedy monologue like old school comedians, like Bob Hope or Jack Benny. Here's the format:

1) Put the 2nd funniest joke first

2) End with the funniest joke

3) Counter a good joke with a bad one.

4) Organize jokes according to theme.

Now, I'm not saying that they used this format, I used Hope and Benny as an example of the style of comic that might have used this approach. Although, I have to say, the "counter a good joke with a bad one" seems more in-keeping with the comedy format of old school comics, rather than modern stand-ups. I think today's comedy professionals try to have continuous funny lines. This particular point seems to indicate a groaner type of joke, like a pun.

But just to remind you the purpose of this article is not to turn you into a comedian. You don't have to worry about that.

That said, I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with using such a funny line in a speech, providing of course that it ties in with your overall topic and it doesn't offend anyone overtly. Some people might be offended by a groaner joke, but that's too bad. It makes you come across as human because we don't always come out with incredible zingers like they do in sitcoms.

The other format is called the "Message Format". There are two types for this format:

A)

Intro

2nd Funniest joke

Main body of Jokes

Theme

Funniest Joke

With the second one being as follows:

B)

Intro

Funniest joke

Other Jokes

Theme

This last one ends on a serious note instead of a laugh. Personally, if I'm doing a humorous speech I'd rather end on a laugh. But that's just my personal taste.

What you might consider doing is reducing your actual speech or presentation by about a third or even a half. Keep the core details that are necessary to convey your message to your audience. So what do you replace the edited content with?

Humour. Funny stories, funny jokes, maybe you could quote other comedians or witty people as long as you give credit where it's due. There's no sense delivering a line by Woody Allen in your presentation and passing it off as your own. There will always be someone who can attribute it to the original author, plus it's highly unethical.

Not only that but by saying something like: "as Woody Allen once said..." you can immediately get your audience into a better state to laugh as they'll remember their favourite Woody Allen moment. Then if the line doesn't have everyone rolling in the aisles then you can get out of it by saying, "obviously it's much better when Woody did it". Your listeners will love you all the more then because you will have revealed yourself to be slightly vulnerable.

You would have to judge for yourself what you think is appropriate. I would have to guess that it may be better for you to end on a comment about your overall theme. What are you trying to convey to your audience? What's the take home message that you want them to walk away from your speech remembering?

If you can follow some of these pointers in your next speech you'll be well on your way to being remembered for your humorous speeches and you'll get people congratulating you afterwards because you made them laugh and in their eyes you just became the star.

7 Cable Clutter and Storage Tips

The idea for this article came to me while I was trying to tidy up all my loose wires down below my computer desk, my entertainment stand, and our other entertainment stand downstairs in the main living room. I even had to figure out what to do with all the extra cables that I didn't need, because I hate just throwing them somewhere in plain sight just sitting there, it makes me feel cluttered, and after all that's what we're trying to prevent, right? After plugging in your computer, your monitor, speakers, your router, ethernet modem, keyboard, and mouse, your workspace is naturally going to be cluttered with cables on top of it, underneath it and all around it. The following tips are in no particular order and very easy to implement, though sometimes you just have to use your common sense to help you out with these things.

Speaker Floor Stand

Tip 1: Twisty ties, velcro, or zip ties - Use these to bundle your cables up together and prevent them from getting tangled up back behind your desk. They make everything more tidy, and it doesn't look like a complete mess when you go back there to do some work. Also use it to help route your cables to and from their final destination. Attach the cables to your desk leg with a zip tie so that way you won't accidentally kick out all your cables while your fidgeting at your desk. However, a disadvantage is if you often change up your cables it may not be so easy to unbundle them if you use zip ties, but generally if you're doing lots of behind-the-pc work you don't really care about cable management.

Speaker Floor Stand

Tip 2: Rubber bands are tidy - When sorting out cables that you don't use, a good way to keep them organized and not bundled up all over the place is to fold them up very neatly and secure the wrapped up cables with a rubber band. It's not going to come off unless you want to use your cable so it's very good for keeping things tidy, and you can get a billion rubber bands for cheap, so no need to worry about the cost.

Tip 3: Take up the cable slack - Another handy way of keeping those cords behind your desk in good shape is to make sure you take up the slack so that way they don't hang all over the place, and it makes it easier to organize them when there's some tension on the cords, but make sure it isn't too tight or you could ruin the cables and the connections that they're plugged into.

Tip 4: Rugs, carpets, beds, and furniture hide your cables well - If you're like me and you have quite a bit of cable that you need to lay down on the floor, maybe to go from your entertainment center to your speakers, or to your pc from your HDTV, carpets, rugs, beds, and furniture are your best friends for hiding the cables, just route them under the carpet, or a rug, or maybe under your lazy boy, it's more aesthetically pleasing and it makes sure nobody trips on them, because that could be disastrous.

Tip 5: Cable Drawers - I know this one might not be a genius tip, but it helps out, nonetheless. Grab a drawer, preferably empty, and throw all your unused cables in it. Whenever you need a cable, come to the drawer and see if you have what you need. It's good, because it makes sure that all your unused cables are in a centralized location that you can always refer back to, rather than stashing a cable in the kitchen closet, another one in your dresser drawer, and the other one behind the trash can (who knows why you would throw it there). Combine this tip and tip 2 the ultimate spare cable drawer.

Tip 6: Tech Bins - If you have many spare components, extra screws, extra tools, or just anything computer related that you seem to have many of, get some bins, or maybe extra drawers, extra shelf space, or just any place where you can organize the like items together, and store them there. A good way to separate it would be: cables, hard drives, memory, the rest of the computer components, or maybe add in an extra category for PCI cards, but just putting them together will help you whenever you're looking for that one special part, and it keeps things neat rather than just having a box or two full of your computer stuff.

Tip 7: Go Wireless - If you haven't made the plunge yet, and you're looking for a once-and-for-all solution to get rid of your cable clutter consider switching everything to wireless, sure there are just some wires that you won't be able to get rid of, but it does get rid of them once-and-for-all. You can rid yourself of the keyboard, mouse, and ethernet wires, and developers have also started making wireless speaker setups.

7 Key Ways to Become a Persuasive Speaker

Would you like to become a more powerful persuader? People need help and you can help them by showing them where they could be, or where their business could be--all through speaking. Here are 7 Keys to overcome your fear of public speaking and bring you success.

Speaker Floor Stand

Number 1: Build rapport with our audience.

Speaker Floor Stand

• Make friends: Arrive early at where ever you're speaking and start immediately building rapport with everyone you meet. Shake hands. Don't sit for a minute. Put your stuff down, set your stage-whether you have a lectern or table to set your notes-and get out on the floor and start networking. Ask them what they do, what their business is like, what they want to know.
• Use names: Remember the names of the people you meet. Ask questions relating to what you're going to talk about so they get excited to hear your speech. When you're up on stage, call them by name, because there's nothing sweeter than hearing your own name. Get to know your audience and say their names while you're speaking-before, during and after.
• Thank them: Don't forget to thank your audience throughout your talk. If somebody comes up and participates as a volunteer, thank them! Have your audience give them applause. Build rapport with thank yous.

Number 2: Be present in the moment.

• Just be: Take your time, stand there, even before you speak, and just be for a second. Make sure that you're present when you speak and practice eye contact. One of my clients did a huge speech for Sony Corporation. He was worrying about not having his tie, about where the location was, the heat, getting in and if the people would like his speech. He was worrying so much about himself that when he got into the room he wasn't present and in the moment with his audience. And isn't that what most of us want? We want to be heard, we want to be significant. Make your audience feel important.

Number 3: Use stories!

• Tell stories: If you want to be a master of influence and a persuader, you have to learn to tell stories; your personal story, a success story, a testimonial. You have great stories! Think about them and write them down. Just call them by the person's name, i.e., "The Bob story." Ask people for their story and ask them if you can use it in your speech, because nothing sells like success.
• Get 3rd party endorsements: It's like a testimonial from a colleague, and even if you haven't experienced the training personally, you know they're good at what they do. That is powerful! If you're in network marketing is there someone up-line that will give you an endorsement? Ask yourself who could be a 3rd party endorsement for you and who you could give a 3rd party endorsement for.
• Use emotion: Make sure that your stories have some excitement, or something that's sad or struggling so that the story will have an emotional impact.

Number 4: Make sure that you stand in your audience's shoes!

• What would you want to hear: I saw a speaker recently for two days and I couldn't stand him. He gave a lot of information but there was so much ego and meanness involved. I don't learn that way. So, don't talk about yourself, talk about what the audience wants to hear from you.
• Ask your audience: If you can go the month before and meet your audience and ask them what they would like to hear, that's a great strategy. But if you can't do that, just stand in their shoes. Find out what they want. Ask yourself, "if I was in that position..." Call the clients and customers that you've helped and ask them, "what was it that you got out of my program, or liked the most?" Give them what they want. Remember, the secret to persuasion is to find out what your audience wants and give it to them.

Number 5: Give overwhelming value!

• Give value: Share your knowledge with people. Position yourself as an expert. It's not about skirting around something, it's about helping people.
• Share your gems: You've got enough knowledge that you can share one or two gems in your speech so that people will want to know more. Don't worry about giving away too much (not formulas or entire systems because they wouldn't understand it in a short talk) but it's okay to give away fundamental gems.

Number 6: Use the PPS model (Problem, Pain, Suffering).

• Let them know you care: People buy because of pleasure or pain. There's a cost associated with what they don't know and a lot of times that cost can be huge! People have a lot of fear about public speaking. That's the pain. And the suffering is that if they don't get out there and speak, those they can help, will never be healed of their own pain or suffering or find a solution--the one only you can provide.
• Let them know that you are the solution: It's your job to get out there and save somebody's life or save somebody's business. It's your job to get your message out. And when you do that, you never have to worry about where your next client is coming from. That's why persuasive speaking is such a great way to market your business, and nowadays the only way. You must be visible to sell in today's economy!

Number 7: Always speak from a place of integrity and honesty.

Be real: Whether you're selling your products or services or offering them from the stage, always do it with integrity. When you tell your story, it has to be a true story; it has to be honest. When you say thank you to build rapport it has to be honest. When you're creating your PPS model of pain and suffering and how people can avoid that, it has to be honest. Always come from a place of honesty and integrity in your speech.

Persuasive speaking is a great way to attract more clients, generate unlimited leads, and grow your business effortlessly, especially when you master the skills of persuasion and influence. To learn more, sign up for the monthly Passionately Speaking e-zine where you will get monthly tips on how to use public speaking to grow your business.
