GROW Circles: A Super Bible School Activity for Elementary Kids

Did you know that growing in God is as simple as G-R-O-W? We can grow in God by G - Going to church or a Bible-believing Bible study. We can grow in God by R - Reading the Bible and praying every day. We can grow in God by O - Obeying God and doing what He says and we can grow in God by W - Witnessing or telling others about Jesus. Second Peter 3:18 says, "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever. Amen!" What a great verse about growing in God and here's a great Bible school activity to help your kids memorize it. I call it "GROW Circles."

Speaker Floor Stand

Here's what you do:

Speaker Floor Stand

There are no teams in this game, per se. Each child in your class will try and win as many points possible. For this activity you will need to make enough large circles on the floor to accommodate your class so that 3 kids at the most can stand inside of them. In other words, if you have 10 kids in your class, you will need to make 4 circles. You could make these by drawing them with chalk or you could make them from paper. You will also need to prepare 4 index cards. One will have a "G" on it and will be worth 100 points. One will have an "R" on it and will be worth 200 points. One will have an "O" on it and will be worth 300 points. And the last one will have a "W" on it and will be worth 400 points. I suggest you laminate these for long-term use as well as prohibiting the kids from bending a corner to act as a marker to show which card is which. Place these cards inside a bucket or hat so that the cards can't be seen. You will also need some music to play that you can easily stop at different intervals. You are now ready to play.

Introduce 2 Peter 3:18 and discuss the four different ways that they can grow in God which I have listed at the beginning of this article. Have the class recite the verse several times so that they can memorize it as soon as possible. They will also need to memorize what each of the four letters in G-R-O-W means. Once the class feels somewhat comfortable with the verse and letters, explain that they are going to play "GROW Circles."

Have the children scatter around the room. They should NOT stand on a circle. Begin playing the music. The children should walk around the room anywhere they like, but they may not touch a circle. You, the teacher, will stop the music at an unknown time to the kids. Once the music stops, every child should get on a circle. There cannot be more than 3 on one circle. Now, take the bucket of GROW cards to each circle. Have one child in each circle pick out one of the cards. He must first say what the letter means. If he does this correctly, then his circle must now say 2 Peter 3:18 together. If they say the verse correctly, then everyone in that circle earns the number of points the letter of the card is worth. Go to each circle and do the exact same thing. Play this Bible school activity as many times as you would like. You will need someone to keep score of what each child gets. You can award the winning child with something special - maybe a growing plant of some kind.

Bose Surround Sound System: A Review of the Bose CineMate Series II Speaker System

Many people are looking for a great home sound system that has the most excellent music-making abilities. Many of these people are looking for a Bose surround sound system because the brand is known for its excellent equipment. If you're looking for the same thing, then the Bose CineMate Series II Speaker System is one of the bets models that you can get. This review will cover everything you need to know about this product.

Speaker Floor Stand

General Description

Speaker Floor Stand

This set is composed of five items which are essential for music-making. The package of this product includes an Acoustimass module, an interface module, two Articulated Array speakers, and a four-button remote control. These devices all make up a great Bose surround sound system that creates the best quality music you can get from a personal home entertainment system. Each Articulated Array speaker has the dimensions 3.3" x 7.8" x 5.1" and weighs 2.6 pounds. The main Acoustimass module measures 14.5" x 8.8" x 19.1" and weighs 23.3 pounds. The interface module has the dimensions 1.1" x 3.3" x 2.2" and it weighs a little less than a pound. The system is designed to be fixed - the Acoustimass module on the floor or on a shelf, and the two speakers mounted on the walls. It's perfect if you have an HDTV or a home theater system because you can produce excellent audio together with your video devices.

All the items in the system are black and they have a nice and sleek finish which makes them excellent in any room and blend with any home décor. The color also hides age, especially if it's well maintained, so you can easily keep your surround sound system looking good despite age and weathering.

Audio

The device is composed of different parts but they all complete a single system which is designed specifically to work as one, so you can't remove one of the parts and isolate it from the rest of the set. The two Articulated Array speakers serve as the main speakers that serve as the major sound source. On the other hand, the Acoustimass module serves as the low-frequency player that makes bass and percussion come out in an excellent manner. The remote control helps you navigate and operate the device more comfortably so you won't have to stand up or come near the set to fix it. However, there are no buttons on the devices, and the remote control is the only possible way for you to navigate the device. So don't lose that remote, and definitely don't break it.

The Proprietary TrueSpace digital processing circuitry, which is a trademark feature of Bose, is designed to deliver a spacious, multichannel sound experience with strong center amplification from just two visible speakers and an Acoustimass module. The Acoustimass module works together with the small speakers to deliver a complete and detailed range of theater sounds and effects. The patented Bose design of the system produces low frequencies for all channels with no audible distortion, minimizing the statics from playing music. The compact Articulated Array speakers provide thrilling home theater sound without the need for rear or center channel speakers, as seen in most surround sound system with lower quality.

Other Features

This system makes use of a 4-button remote control which enables you to manipulate the device at a fair distance. The interface module has two LED indicators and connectors for audio input, and it receives infrared commands from the remote for the speaker system. It also connects directly to your TV while showing the status of your speaker system. The easy setup of this system makes it a lot more preferable than many other surround sound systems which need a lot of installation and connection all over the house.

Conclusion

I can only say that as compared to other surround sound systems, a Bose surround sound system really has an advantage. And this is exactly what the Bose CineMate Series II Speaker System can give you if you choose to buy it. I recommend this product to all the individuals out there who want to make their homes a perfect pad to live in, with the best sound system to boot.

Constructive Criticism - "How Can I Say This Nicely?"

The best way to improve your public speaking skills is to get feedback from someone who was sitting in the audience. They have a unique viewpoint and they can tell you what worked, and all too often what didn't work. I've spent a lot of time evaluating speakers, especially technical speakers, and I've discovered 3 mistakes that they make which can be easily corrected.

Speaker Floor Stand

1. Who You Talking To?: Each and every one of the presenters spent a lot of their "stage time" with their bodies pointed towards the projection screen and actually talked to the screen instead of the audience. This happens way too often when you use PowerPoint to create an outline of you speech and end up reading it off of the screen.

Speaker Floor Stand

Solution: The correct way to present material is to make sure that you always face your audience. The slides are there to reinforce your verbal message - you should spend no time staring at them. Instead, have a conversation with your audience and let us choose if we want to look at you or your slide.

2. Here? There? Over There?: Just where to stand was a major problem for each presenter. There was a lectern on the stage (def: a lectern is big and goes all the way down to the floor, a podium is shorter and generally sits on a table. They both hold a speaker's notes) and nobody seemed to know what to do with it. Some stood behind it, some stood off to its side, and some completely ignored it. They all moved from behind it to in front of it and back during their presentations. The end result was that this turned out to be a distraction to everyone who was watching the presentations.

Solution: Make a decision before you start to speak - in front of the lectern or behind it. Once you make this decision, stick with it. Neither decision is right or wrong, only alternating between the two positions is wrong because it becomes distracting.

3. Handy Hands: Hands sure are nice to have. Except when you are presenting to a group. Then the difficult question of what to do with your hands when you aren't making a gesture comes up. Each of the 10 engineers who presented did something different with their hands: in the pockets, behind the back, crossed in front, praying that they don't get kicked in the groin, etc. What this ended up doing is once again distracting the audience as we watched the speaker try to determine with what to do with their hands.

Solution: When not using them as a part of your speech, let your hands drop to your sides and let them dangle there. This sounds so easy; however, it really is quite difficult to do. If you spend time practicing talking in front of a mirror at home, you'll be able to catch yourself doing "handy" things and can quickly put a stop to it.

Dealing With Difficult Participants - How to Handle the Distracter

All trainers have to manage difficult participants at one time or another. Whether the difficult participant is a talker or know-it-all, a fighter or arguer, a quiet or withdrawn person, a complainer, an unconsciously incompetent person, a distracter, or a rambler, the trainer needs to know what to do and what not to do when handling the behavior, and how to avoid taking the behavior personally. This article deals with the Distracter who asks questions or raises issues that are not related to the topic under discussion.

Speaker Floor Stand

The Distracter asks questions or raises issues that are not related to the topic which is being discussed. Talks on the side about unrelated things while the group is trying to work. Jumps into the discussion without raising a hand or using other courtesies for obtaining permission to speak.

Speaker Floor Stand

What a Trainer Can Do:

In front of the group:

Conduct a large group discussion to create ground rules for basic classroom courtesies. Use a Koosh ball to recognize speakers. In this way, only the person with the Koosh has permission to speak. Post a process map of the agenda on the wall as a continual visual reminder of the topics to be covered. Provide Post-Its on the participant tables and encourage participants to post their questions on a flip chart "parking lot." Clearly introduce each topic and close the discussion on each topic. Quietly monitor small group activities so that you can intervene where necessary. Move close to the distracter who is speaking while others are working, to use physical proximity to prompt him or her to stop talking. Make an assignment that will distract the distracter and ultimately provide the attention s/he is seeking in a more controlled and acceptable fashion. Briefly acknowledge the distracter and indicate who actually has the floor to speak. Say "Thank you, but let's see what others have to say, now." Stand beside him/her. Put him/her in charge of an activity. Try comments such as, "Interesting, but could you hold it until later?" "I'd like to discuss that, but we really have to get back to our topic." If the distracter is conducting a side conversation while someone else has been recognized to speak, make a general statement: "Could I ask everyone to give their attention to [the speaker]? Thank you." or "I'm not sure that everyone can hear what [the speaker] is saying. " If you are able to create a friendly relationship with the distracter, use gentle humor to rein the person in.

In private:

Thank the person for his or her energy and involvement- then explain your time or agenda constraints. Request the person's assistance.

What a Trainer Should NOT Do:

Get distracted from the agenda or the topic at hand. Lose patience or focus. Get angry at the behavior. Let the person control the discussion. Let the person break the group's classroom rules. Allow the person to treat other participants in a disrespectful fashion.

Real Life Example: I recently gave a workshop for a very large group. One participant, who sat in the front of the room, had something to say about almost everything we discussed. He was polite and always raised his hand, but his comments were often philosophical and tangential to the point under discussion. There were times I was at a loss to make the connection between his comment and our topic. Yet I know that he had a good heart and good intentions, so I practiced my patience and redirection skills.

For the most part, I would try to recognize others before I recognized him. Rather than dwelling on his comments and drawing others into a tangential discussion, I would simply call on him, thank him for his comment when he was done, and then move on. When I could manage it, I would indicate that we needed to move on and therefore would not have time for all comments, thereby avoiding calling on him.

My goal was to stay on topic and on time, while involving and treating all participants respectfully. I certainly hope that my demeanor remained patient and welcoming, and that I did not telegraph my growing anxiety to him or to the other participants. I did find that, on occasion, his wonderful rather quirky sense of humor was very welcome. So, rather than labeling him, I attempted to value him as a contributing member of the group.

Commentary: When confronted with any difficult behavior, we need to be able to step back and objectively assess what might be the root cause of the behavior. Why would someone choose distracting behavior?

Some people really enjoy chatting and tend to think with their mouths. They get so focused on their thoughts and expression of those thoughts that they are unaware of others around them.

Sometimes, they are very philosophical and simply miles ahead of the rest of us. As a result, although there is a logical connection to the topic from their perspective, their comment sounds off-base to everyone else.

Their enthusiasm for the topic may cause them to speak out without waiting to be acknowledged. Although their behavior may be distracting to the trainer, their interest and their comments may be on target.

In all of these instances, their behavior is not intended to be disruptive, even if the trainer may tire of trying to rein them in. Patience and firm but respectful facilitation are both key to handling the distracter.

In the next article, we will look at how to manage the Rambler who has difficulty making simple, concise statements.

5 Tips on Overcoming the Fear of Public Speaking

Why are so many people terrified of the thought of public speaking? You could be the most confident person, but if someone asked you to speak in front of a crowd of people you would immediately start to sweat, shake and feel very sick. It is a fact that Americans fear public speaking more than death. The British fear it less - they fear death more! Some actors go through stage fright at some point in their career.

Speaker Floor Stand

The American actress Daryl Hannah went to Paul McKenna to overcome her stage fright - it was her first time on stage. British actor Steven Fry actually didn't turn up for his stage performance - he fled the country instead - because he could not face the theatre audience. These are just some examples of professional people who themselves suffer from the phobia of appearing in front of large crowds. Though these two actors were confident in front of a camera but when it came to appearing live on stage with a vast crowd looking at them their confidence withered and panic set in.

Speaker Floor Stand

One of the reasons so many people fear public speaking is because when at school they were asked to read in front of the class and when the teacher corrected mistakes it would obviously trigger the other children to mock the reader. (Teachers tend to point out the mistakes children make instead of reinforcing children on how well they are doing.) This fear stays with the child until adulthood and it eventually becomes a phobia. The thing is all you need to know on how to overcome your fear of public speaking is three things:

1. Manage your state
2. Know your content
3. Speak with passion

What I mean by manage your state is that say this famous actor suffered from stage fright and this was his strategy on how he felt scared before going on stage:

1. Imagining that some people in the audience were critics and were saying horrible things about him, i.e. "God he's crap. Stiff as a board. He should go back to working in that factory."

2. Feeling the body stiffen because of the imaginary "remarks" and then making a few dialogue errors because now he believes that everyone hates him.

3.. Then finely in the actor's negative internal dialogue he imagines now the critics are saying something like, i.e. "He is past his sell by date." The more he believes his negative internal talk the more he makes mistakes.

He of course was not managing his state. What his internal dialogue should have been saying is:

1. Imagining that when he walked on stage that the critics thought, i.e. "What a great actor. He gets better and better."

2. With the positive self talk he gives himself he will automatically become more relaxed and confident with his performance.

3. As his performance progresses he is confident that he has done a good job and the critics are loving his performance....

It is also important to know your content. If before you go to do public speaking and you don't know what your are on about can seriously harm your presentation and yourself....A good example of the importance of knowing your content comes from self help guru Paul McKenna who had a deep learning experience. He had been practising Neuro Linguistic Programming for about 10 years and before he went to teach one of his seminars he had mentally learnt a script and planned on what he was going to say. Just before he went on stage Richard Bandler, the architect of Neuro Linguistic Programming, asked if he could do a different module from the one he was given. Of course this worried Paul because he had not mentally rehearsed the script for the other module. From the look on Paul's face Richard Bandler gathered he was worried so he said: "You have all the knowledge on this subject you need. You just have to be in the right state and the words and ideas will flow. After all, if you were sitting talking with friends about it you wouldn't be worried, would you?" Paul finely started to feel relaxed and he went on stage for the first time with no rehearsed script. He said it was one of the best classes he had ever taken! So this is why it's important to know your content before you take any form of class.

Whether you're a professional public speaker or actor it is important to speak with a passion about your subject. Even if you are not a professional public speaker if you are passionate about something it will come out in your voice and the audience will automatically warm to you.

5 Steps to overcome fear of public speaking:

Think about any upcoming public performance/s you may have. How do you want to feel during your performance, i.e. enthusiastic, passionate, confident, etc. Visualize a circle on the floor. Now fill the circle with any feelings you desire. Think of a time when in the past you had your desired feelings, i.e. confident, passionate, etc. An example of the circle: "I fill this circle with confidence and I stand in a confident manner. I am confident with how I look, stand and act. I am also passionate, enthusiastic and motivated to be the best at all I accomplish...." Now it is time to step into the circle and allow the feelings you desire to spread all over your entire being. Imagine yourself doing all the things you want to do and as soon as the feelings start to fade step out of the circle. Recharge the circle with all the emotions you desire and then step back into the circle. This exercise should be repeated at least 5 times until you automatically feel the way you wish to feel and do the things you want to do with ultimate confidence!

So the above 5 tips will help you overcome the fear of public speaking. So don't procrastinate go and become that POSITIVE GIANT you know is inside you!
